Maintenance Damage

Description
Common forms of maintenance damage include impacts from explosives and projectiles during slag removal, wall thinning from excessive washing procedures, poor weld repair preparation, and mishandling of tools during repair work. These types of failures usually appear as dents, gouges, or severely eroded areas. Exact diagnosis requires comparison of the damage pattern to maintenance tools recently used in the area.


Corrective Actions
Cracking and through wall holes require immediate replacement. Less severe damage should be evaluated individually to determine the proper course of action. Quality control of procedures and training of personnel can minimize future damage.
